| Connaught Place |
|
Connaught Place, popularly known as CP, is one of the biggest trading centers in Delhi built by the British on the design of by W.H. Nichollas and executed by Robert Tor Russell, chief architect to the (then) Government of India in 1932. It is one area recognized on any map without any difficulty because of its circular / horse shoe shaped area. It's generally assumed that the architects believed that this shape would prove lucky for the tradesmen. Connaught Place has something for everyone, book hubs for book lovers, places for people who want to have a discussion, varied food joints and of course 'picturesque' shops for shopaholics.

Divisions of CP Market
The Connaught Place market can be divided into Outer Circle, Inner Circle, Janpath and Palika Bazaar. Connaught Place is easily accessible with three metro stations in and around it; Mandi House, Barakhamba and Rajiv Chowk. The Outer Circle has a lot of office complexes and connects to entire Delhi with its transportation system. Though auto rickshaws are easily available, it is best to explore each and every lane in your own sweet time. Many Fast Food chain like Barista, Café Coffee Day, Wimpy's and Mc Donald's have their stores here.
Outer Circle
The Outer Circle is dotted with branded stores like Swatch, neighboring with innumerable restaurants (both Indian and Specialty), Five Star Hotels like The Park and The Intercontinental, pubs like DV8 and Blues and bookshops like Oxford Bookstore.
Inner Circle
The Inner Circle, on the other hand, has just miles and miles of stores like Numero Uno, Levi's, Lee Cooper, Nalli, Mohan Singh Place (custom made jeans and trousers), Fab India, Pepul's Tree and Puma. Inner Circle also includes two smaller markets, namely Janpath and Palika Bazaar.
Janpath
Janpath is basically famous for its dirt cheap prices for stylish western wear it stocks. This is one of the favorite places for college students to shop. When you shop here use tricks for successful bargaining. You will need lots of patience with politeness to have the desired effect (read discounting prices). There are no permanent shops here, just plastic shelters 'barricading their territory', each selling clothes of every fabric from cotton to chiffon, from denim to nylon.
Palika Bazaar
Palika Bazaar is an underground, air-conditioned market made by the government for small entrepreneurs. There are approximately 390 shops selling diverse range of items like Chinese electronics items and clothing. Made in the 1970s, today not many people go there due to lack of basic amenities like trial rooms and clean toilets, which the glamorous new malls offer. The government is putting in efforts to make it world-class for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. |
