Surajkund Lake
Surajkund Lake is located in Faridabad, a Haryanvi city in National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. Barely one hour away from the capital, it is an idyllic reservoir amidst a lush green cover. It is a popular tourist spot, which can be accessed easily through the national highways. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a proper natural lake but a man-made reservoir filled with ground and rainwater.

Location
Surajkund Lake is situated in Faridabad district of Haryana, at 25 kms drive from Delhi.

The Annual Fair
Also known as the Surajkund Crafts Mela, the fair is very popular amongst the lovers of ethnic handicrafts and handloom items. The first fair was organized by the Haryana Tourism Department in 1981 as an initiative to promote both the destination and the traditional crafts of India. This exceptional fair takes place from 1st to 15th February and is positioned on the setting of Surajkund Fair Village. This ‘Village’ shows its own effortless conventional appeal enticing both the tourists and visitors.

The ‘Village’ is decorated with a new theme every year and states from all over India participate to demonstrate and sell their crafts. Folk dancers at regular intervals entertain guests and even convince some to join them. If you get hungry, then head to a state run food stall and taste some delicious local delicacy. Since the quality of the handicrafts is high you can buy whatever catches your fancy, directly from the person who made it. Thus you can encourage him to continue the tradition of making handicrafts.

Monsoon Role
The reservoir has a semi-circular pattern that has steps leading to the water. The lake saw some major repairs in the 1920s during the British reign. When the unmerciful summer sun dries the reservoir, it is refilled by rains. However, apart from the monsoon season, the place remains sometimes dry.

The Legend
The reservoir has two major stories associated with it. The first is about the majestic Sun temple that once overlooked the lake and the second is about Tomar King Surajpal. He built this reservoir in 10th century because he wanted to establish a city here and a city needs water for various things. This lake symbolizes the establishment of the second city of Delhi called Lal Kot.
