India Visa Rules
Visa is a form of permission for a non-citizen to travel to, enter, transit or remain in a particular country. The document is of utmost importance while traveling internationally. Some rules and regulations are to be followed when applying and using these. Some important points to be kept in mind while traveling to India are:

visa-rules
Any foreigner who wants to enter India must have a valid visa affixed on his or her passport. Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and his family can have 10-year visa duration.
An Indian tourist visa is valid for a period of 180 days. Though it can be extended under extremely special circumstances, one has to register themselves at the Foreigners Registration Office within two weeks of their arrival.
Any violation of the above provision makes one liable for prosecution under section 5 of the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939.
Applying for a visa through the Indian Consulate in one's resident country is easier and faster. Money is to be paid only in Money Order or cash (ONLY when applying IN PERSON). DO NOT pay through cheque.
Special Permits are required to go to places in the North-Eastern States of India (Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram) because of insurgency fears. Special permits are also required in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep islands (only Bangaram Island is open to foreigners).
These permits can be obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs or Indian Embassies abroad and extra charges and a fixed time period are applied.
One should carefully check if each section of his / her passport or visa is properly filled or not. If major glitches are found then one is likely to be deported.
Always carry an identity proof like a driving license, a copy of the passport an visa, in case they are stolen or lost. These documents will fasten the process of new documents.
Every foreigner who is about to finally depart from India is required to surrender his certificate of registration either to the Registration Officer of the place where he is registered or of the place from where he intends to depart or to the Immigration.
The power for VISA conversions and extensions for foreigners residing or touring in India rests with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Foreigner's Division, Jaisalmer House, 26, Man Singh Road New Delhi. The change of VISA status from one category to another category is normally not allowed and can be considered only in extremely special circumstances.
Nepal and Bhutan nationals, if entering India by land or air from the Nepal or Bhutan border respectively, do not require a passport for entering India. However, they are required to possess, authorized identity proof.

Carry only one pillion rider on your two-wheeler.

There is no provision of 'Visa on Arrival' in India so it is advisable to have a valid visa before departure from one's native country.
Any foreigner or Indian coming from a country known for Yellow fever shall produce a Quarantine certificate. If the document is not produced then he / she shall be kept in isolation for six days and medically examined by World Health Organization (WHO) rules.
